A Busted Belt & a Resistor Later

Saturday was going pretty well! Cruising in the Jeep, with the top down, and taking in a nice sunny day. Out of nowhere a bang under the hood, smoke started rolling out, and the power steering was shot. Fortunately, I was on the way back to the house when it happened, so it wasn’t too bad. A trip to the car parts store later and I’m installing a serpentine belt.

I HIGHLY recommend that you get yourself a Haynes Shop Manual for your vehicle, especially an off-road vehicle! This thing pays for itself time and time again as you are able to look up exactly the part you need and how to install it. Excellent resource!

Now, a trip to the parts store just for one thing is a bit of a waste. So, I decided to take a stab at that AC that didn’t work either. So, the fan only came on when the unit was turned on High. This can sometimes mean that the thermostat resistor is failing. I won’t even take the time to point out which one is the old one and which one is the new one:

A little wrench time and we’re back in business. The air now blows on all the settings and everything under the hood is reconnected. Thankfully, this was some basic maintenance and not something over the top. Speaking of tops, I’ve got to figure out what to do about that soft top.
