Adding some Tailgate Space

One of the things that I realized from RITO 21 was that I needed to address my lack of cooking space when out adventuring. My lack of space meant that I was at the mercy of the elements for whether or not I could cook food or make coffee. I had my small cook stove, but I needed to save the gas for the cooking classes I had to lead!

There is more than just space to address, but I want to share this Jeep mod because it’s a little more in-depth than others that I’ve done to date. Not in how complicated it is, but in how much you’ve got to figure out exactly where everything is going to go. The kit that I got was on Amazon and overall I’m really happy with it. Mine came with a faulty latch, but I made an adjustment for it to work.

Tape off an area where you will need to drill holes for the work bench

Get the alignment level and square, mark the holes with a sharpie, and drill pilot holes.

Set the rivet nuts in place (requires a special tool) and you are all set!

Tucks away nicely and now I have actual work space!

This was a really straight forward install, but the lack of a good template can be frustrating. As I said one of my hinges doesn’t have the right tension on it to latch closed, but I’m working on getting that fixed. I don’t want all the locking work to be done by one hinge.

So far I am really impressed with how sturdy this is! I suspect that I will install 2 more rivet nuts just so there are 3 on each side, but that will wait for another day. This is going to be really handy when I add a burner and storage kit to the Jeep. Ideally, I would always be cooking by a fire, but now I at least have a small cook/prep space and it’s really good height for standing up and working!

If I’m honest the latch really bothers me. Just knowing it’s there and it’s not right just bugs me. Overall the manufacturer is pretty good to talk with. They thing it’s because of an alignment issue and I think it’s because of a spring tension issue. That aside the shelf is a really sturdy product and I’m super happy with the results!
